Playing Starcraft is good for your brain

Next time someone tells you to stop wasting time playing videogames, tell them they don't know what they're talking about. Videogames are often used as an escape goat whenever some crazy person goes in a shooting spree (like those troubled people wouldn't do it just the same even if they had no computer at all) - but people fail o realize there are lots of good stuff about games: and I'm not talking just about spending a good time.

A study has shown that playing complex scenarios of Starcraft 2 - particularly levels that involve things happening offscreen  - can boost cognitive flexibility. Meaning, your brain gets better at dealing with constantly changing circumstances.

Just keep in mind that not all games are bound to have the same results. A game that requires you to mindlessly tap on the screen to collect jewels or cabbages or whatever it may be, won't do much for you other than maybe improve you eye-hand coordination. :P

Maybe we're not too far off from a time where people will be required to play a quick gaming session when they get to work, just to "jump start" those neurons and get ready for the day ahead. :)

Animal Mind Control gets Closer to Reality

In James Cameron's Avatar, we see humans taking control of other biological specimens - and that is something that can only belong to the realm of science fiction, right? Well... not so fast. We're still a long way from that, but researchers have been able to mind-control a rat wagging its tail.

Yes, it's still a very modest achievement, but the key point is that it proves that it's possible. With a few more decades of development, who's to say what this methods will allow us to do? Can you imagine being able to dive deep into the ocean controlling a fish, or maybe even experience the world through the eyes of a tiny insect?

Of course, this same technology also opens up a lot of room for complicated scenarios... like mind-controlling another people's bodies; or even being used in reverse, giving an animal control of a human body. ... I can sense a flurry of hollywood writers going into overdrive writing scripts based on the implications of this technology. :)

Honda show Thought-Controlled Asimo Robot

Everybody knows Honda's Asimo, the popular robot that shows us what the future will bring us. What you probably didn't know is that Honda is hard at work to make it possible for you to control it using thought alone.

While this kind of technology has still a long way to go, no one can deny it has been evolving at a very interesting pace. This new system has a 90% accuracy in recognizing moves and it doesn't require any special training.

Suddenly, I'm thinking this kind of brain-machine interface technology can become commonplace sooner rather than later.

Right Brain vs Left Brain Creativity Test

Have you ever wondered which side of your brain is more "powerful"?

Traditionally, creative people use the RIGHT side of their brains more than the LEFT.
This doesn't mean you can automatically draw or paint a masterpiece, but it sure helps you see the world in a different way.

So, just take this test and find out if you're a "righty" or a "lefty". :)
