Anyone can now have an IMAX at home... for just $400k

There's a common feeling among anyone leaving an IMAX for the first time - the feeling that "I'd love to have one of these at home!" Well, now you can, as long as you can pay $400k for it.

Philips Cinema 21:9 now with 3D and Local Dimming

The Philips Cinema 21:9 os one of the most coveted LCD screens available today, but guess what: the best got even better!

This 21:9 LCD screen grew from 56 to 58", and besides being 3D-ready (you probably already know I'm not "into" that 3D marketing hype) it indeed has something I greatly value - and I don't mean the Ambilight surround light. I'm referring to the local LED dimming technology, which Philips here calls LED PRO.

Now, all I need is to come up with 4000€ so I can stare at it on my own wall...

Digital Cinema - Spot the Differences

Digital cameras are constantly improving, and the recent batch of DSLRs like the Canon 5D Mark II with its excellent low light performance, some film makers are now replacing their trusted film cameras with these digital intruders.

For instance, Shane Hurlbut has worked in films like Into the Blue and Terminator Salvation, and is now challenging us to spot the differences in his latest trailer. What parts were shot with digital cameras (5D Mark II and Sony 950) and what parts where shot on film with a Arri 235? Can you tell the difference?

And next year, the 5D Mark II will also be able to shoot FullHD 1080p at 24 and 25fps with a firmware upgrade. :)

Laser Projectors

I don't even have to tell you how desperate I am to see one of those LaserVue sets - the ones using lasers as light sources and therefore able to show colors well beyond traditional technologies.

While LaserVue is a rearprojection TV set, it seems that the same concept will soon be used in front projection systems.

Up till now, 35mm film has regarded as the reference in color reproduction, able to reproduce 60% of the color gamut visible by the human eye.
However, these laser projector are capable of reproducing 80% of the visible spectrum - becoming the new reference.
(And, with more pwerful lasers, it might even reach 90% of the visible color range!)

I just hope these projectors arrive to my local cinemas soon - or even better - that I can afford one at home! :)

Imaginary Movie Posters

This is what is happens when someone asks other people to use their favorite image editors (Photoshop? Gimp?) and work their magic on their favorite movie posters.

Maybe with the lack of momentum Hollywood is facing due to the WGA strike, they can seriously consider doing some of these alternate movies by using existing footage and some digital effects.

See the rest of them at Worth1000.

There's a slight overuse of movies like Alien and Terminator, but considering the target audience, that's to be expected, right? :)
