Blackberry PlayBook Tablet

Here it is at last: the RIM tablet formerly known as BlackPad is now officially known as... PlayBook.

It has everything you'd might expect to see in a tablet, and more: dual core ARM CPU (Cortex A9), 1GB RAM, two HD cameras (3Mp and 5Mp), FullHD 1080p video recording and playback, HDMI, USB, WiFI, Bluetooth, OpenGL, Flash, HTML5, and lots more... all in a device measuring 5.1"x7.6"x0.4" (130mm x 193mm x 10mm) and weighing less than a pound (approximately 0.9 lb or 400g).

As to what makes it tick, the heart of the system is a new BlackBerry Tablet OS, developed by RIM's recently acquired QNX . and knowing QNX software quality tradition - we're looking into a "bullet-proof OS" here!

Very good news indeed.

If the PlayBook works as fluidly as shown in the following video, we definitely have a winner here.

There are still two very important things left to be known: the price, and an actual launch date (early 2011 they say).

Even with an iPad 2 coming soon after, this new Blackberry Tablet OS does make Apple's iOS look dated (just look at those pre-historic push notification popups that are still present in iOS!)

In the beginning of the year there were a lot of promissed tablets that failed to become real... but rest assured, we might have had to wait an extra year, but 2011 will definitely become the year the Tablet Wars will begin.
(And it's nice to see RIM in a very good position to stand a fight with this PlayBook! :)
