The Last Starfighter will return as a TV Series with VR scenes

The Last Starfighter is one of those movies that was cherished by sci-fi fans amazed by the growing capabilities of computer generated digital effects (and for the better or worse has resisted the remake/reboot treatment). But it seems it's now about to return, as a TV series with a twist: some parts will be virtual reality.

In this new The Starfighter Chronicles we'll join the adventures of the space force, but instead of looking at it on our TV screens, some parts will request us to put on our VR goggles and step inside the action, allowing us to look wherever we want (hopefully, during the space combats action scenes, I guess.)

Don't worry too much about not having a VR set yet, you'll likely be able to do with just some simple setup using your smartphone and Google Cardboard adapter. I think that, by the time the series is about to air, there will be plenty more ways for you to get something like that, just like it happened back in the days where magazines brought us those paper 3D glasses to watch 3D movies on our TV sets.

Only time will tell if, just like what happened with 3D, these VR scenes in TV series will be more than a gimmick. If done right it may be the stepping stone into a new age of experiencing more immersive TV content; on the other hand, it may be something that people will quickly get fed up with and never look at it again.

For Starfighter fans, what matters the most is that they don't focus so much in the VR aspect of the series that they forget the rest of the show. :)
