Portuguese Communist Party wants to legalize file sharing

All the attempts to fight file sharing have failed, and it has been shown, over and over again, that more is done by providing attractive legal ways to access those contents than by trying to repress it. In Portugal, PCP (Portuguese Communist Party) is proposing a new way to deal with this matter, by legalizing all file sharing on the internet.

Portuguese technology powers citywide mesh internet

Our need to be always connected to the world has pushed cities to deploy hundreds or thousands of WiFi hotspots, but there's still a lot to be done. What if you could have internet in a bus, tram, taxi, and everywhere else - and better yet, that wouldn't require each of these mobile hotspots to have a separate (and paid) cellular plan. That's what a Portuguese company has already done in some of our cities, and is now ready to do the same in the USA.

Portugal about to apply copyright levies on all digital storage

Forgive me for bringing you something that is only relevant for people in Portugal, but the thing is so absurdly ridiculous that I can't help sharing it with you. Times are tough for everyone, and here in Portugal music sales have been dropping a lot over the last few years - also due to the fact that no one wants to buy CDs anymore, opting to buy music on iTunes or using streaming services like Spotify.

Hacker sends porn movies to outdoor turistic screens in Portuga

Well, you'll all know by now just how much I like to share all the great things Portugal has to offer to everyone coming to visit. But a few days ago, for people in the small town of Ponte de Lima, what popped up on the screen of a tourist information panel wasn't very "touristic"... although it did manage to grab the attention of everyone around it.

A hacker gained access to the system and decided it would be fun to play porn movies on the outdoor screen installed in the center of the village. As the interactive panel also has a camera, he was able to see what was happening, and when the police came around he even went as far as changing the porn movie to one including actors using police uniforms. While they hurried to shut down the system the solution was a very low-tech one: covering the screen with black plastic bag, to which the hackers responded with insulting messages on screen.

These panels are used in several other towns around the country, and this was the first time someone gained access to the system (most likely due to a weak password rather than an actual "hack"). But until the company that designed the systems checks all the possibilities, these panels will be left offline.

Although the images "shocked" some of the bystanders some were adamant to say "it was nasty stuff, but everyone was watching it". :)
