Swype for iPhone and iPad for free [grab it while you can]

I didn't mind paying a few cents for Swype, buf it haven't done so already, then you'll have no excuse for not taking the opportunity to grab it now - as it is currently available for free in the App Store.

It took them long enough, but finally Swype - one of the most amazing soft keyboards in existence today - has taken the last step and gone from beta version to an official, paid app available in Google's Play Store.

Yes, you can now get Swype for just $0.99, and enjoy the art of typing as you glide your finger over the keyboard. Yes, Google's latest Android keyboard also has a swype mode, and SwiftKey - regarded as the best soft keyboard ever by many - also joined the swype technique a while back. But, Swype is the one that invented the concept, and in the hands of Nuance... we can expect it to still hold its ground.

Even if you're not fond of swiping to write it also easily catters for regular typing modes, as well as integration Dragon Dictation - probably the best voice recognition engine on the market today.

Swype supports dozens of local dialects, adjusts to the typing of each user, does word prediction, has word selection gestures for quick and easy editing, and also integrates with Dragon Mobile Assistant.

Swype gets Voice Recognition

If you've been around for a while, you'll know that I'm a very big fan of Swype ever since it first showed up, nearly 5 years ago (and more recently, of TouchPal as well). If you don't know what Swype is, it's that amazing touchscreen keyboard where you can simply "draw" the word you wish, swiping your finger across the letters, and the words pop up as if by magic.

Now, Swype is going a step further, and adds voice recognition with Dragon Dication!

For now, it's limited to just a few languages, (the usual: english, french, german, italian, spanish) but Swype promises many more will be added in 2012 - which considering the number of languages Dragon Dictation supports, shouldn't be that hard to do.

Other than that, this new beta version also adds a improved language modeling algorithm, designed to increase the accuracy of its suggestions (and that learns over time), and also download any of the 50+ additional languages it supports directly from Swype's Settings window.

Free Swype Beta for Android

While some users can benefit from the amazing Swype keyboard as a factory installed feature in their Android devices, lots of others are left with nothing but the standard factory default Android keyboard - which is rather nice, but fails to amaze in regard to Swype.

Well, now you'll be able to install Swype for free on your Android, providing you're willing to help catch some bugs and improve it even further: by joining the Swype beta program.

Just head to Swype Beta, register your email, and you'll receive a download link to install Swype in your Android device.


This beta version expires in 3 months, but as there are regular updates coming out, you'll be able to keep using Swype for a very long time.

Of course, if you already have Swype pre-installed, you won't be needing any of this! :)

Swype Touchscreen Text Input

Another interesting project shown on Techcrunch 50 was Swype.

Coming from the inventor of the T9 predictive text input you can find in every cell phone, this is believed to be the "next generation" text input method for touchscreen devices.

Watch the demo video, because it can soon become as common in tablet and touchscreen devices as T9 is in cellphones.
