The first Ubuntu phone is coming from BQ

Thousands of users were let down when the "over-the-top" Ubuntu Edge failed its crowdfunding campaign goal. But now the Ubuntu Phone is back and for real, thanks to a small spanish manufacturer that is well known in Europe: BQ is bringing the first Ubuntu Phone to market, the Aquaris E 4.5 Ubuntu Edition.

This time, we have a down-to-earth approach, as BQ and Canonical now rely on one of the existing smartphones (the Aquaris E 4.5) and simply replace the usual Android with Ubuntu Edition.

We're talking about a mid/low end device, with a 4.5" 960x540px screen, MediaTek quad-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, 5 and 8MP cameras, and dual SIM. The price is exactly the same as the Android version: 169,90 euros - putting it well within reach of anyone willing to try out an Ubuntu Phone (something that wouldn't happen with a 200+ euro device.)

To amp things up, BQ will resort to flash sales over the next weeks, so you should follow their social media accounts if you're interested. Will this be the birth of a new platform that can stand up to the Android-iOS dominance? We'll have to wait and see..

Quem possui um Aquaris E4.5 poderá instalar a imagem disponibilizada pela Canonical, a qual difere em alguns aspectos da que equipa o Ubuntu Edition, que foi alterada pela BQ.
Há inclusive a possibilidade de dual boot Android/Ubuntu, mas este assunto, tal como o anterior, estarão dependentes dos trabalhos da comunidade de developers. E para o dual boot, o armazenamento não será aquele que se desejaria...

São portanto boas notícias. Mais um SO que se vem juntar ao Android, iOS e Windows Phone, alargando assim o leque de escolha do consumidor, o que é sempre de salutar.
