I believe almost everyone has experienced the despair of clicking the "send" button on an email as they realize it's going to the wrong recipient (or maybe you've wrongfully placed hundreds of emails in the CC field instead of the BCC). Once that email is sent, there's no way to take it back... unless you're Goldman Sachs.

Gmail begins to show images safely by default

Email is still the most popular way for people to "talk" on the internet, but it's also a fertile ground for spammers to try and take advantage of us. As there is no guaranteed way for a sender to know if their email was actually opened and read by the recipient, they soon come across an easy solution to give them that valuable information (a person that opens up spam emails is more likely to "fall for it" and becomes a much likely target for it.)

How do they do it? Simply be inserting images in the emails. When you email program displays the images, it grabs them from the spammer's servers, indicating you've opened the spam email (and also providing your IP address). That caused most email clients to disable the image loading on emails... which gives no indication to spammers, but might also make you miss some content where a image would be worth a thousand words.

Now Google has come up with a way to safely show images in Gmail, and it's actually quite simple as well. Instead of letting your computer talk to the (potential) spammer server to get the images, it acts as a proxy in between them. So, it's Google that grabs the images, and your computer grabs them from Google's own server. So... no way for spammers to know your IP address, or even if you actually opened the email or it was just Google's server checking the image.

So, now the only time you might want to disable images on your Gmail account is if your data plan doesn't allow for that much mobile traffic and you have friends that insist on sending you multi-megabyte photos in each and every email.

Even though I like this safe image system, I think I'll still be leaving my "don't show images by default" and do it for a just a handful of contacts I do want to see images from.

Instant Quoting in Gmail

Seems there's a little known - but extremely useful - feature in Gmail that can help you lots when you want to to quote something when answering to an email.

You just need to select the text you want to quote on the email you received before pressing reply, and when you do Gmail will automatically quote just that excerpt for you, instead of adding it all to the reply.

This way, an email conversation can become a lot more readable, instead of piling up everything - wasting space and making it a lot more messy to track down (though Gmail also does a great job of hiding out most of the useless stuff.)

Microsoft Launches Outlook.com

Microsoft is trying to get up to speed in the web email area, and now offers an improved and rejuvenated web email that stands on top of its famed email program name: Outlook.com.

As you'd expect, this outlook.com follows the new design guidelines of the metro and Windows 8 guidelines, and that's a good thing - for once, I could actually navigate around it and figure out how to use it without getting frustrated like on the previous hotmail/live interfaces. This new design also means there's little wasted space (and no big ads that makes us believe we're in a spam site), with the focus being on the email and the content that matters the most.
And if you remember how different it was to open the old web exchange site in another browser other than Internet Explorer, you'll like to know that outlook.com does indeed work perfectly fine in any modern browser - it even has some nifty animations, like "flying" the sent mail out of the screen.

This outlook.com can also integrate lots other services and accounts: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google and Skype (soon), making it a "one-stop-check-all" service to keep all your contacts in sync, as well as check all your friends updates and new photos.

All the incoming mails can be sorted automatically: from your contacts, mailing lists, social networks, etc. so you can easily manage it all with just a few clicks. And you also het the free Office Web Apps – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote - to view/edit/create your documents and attachments (as well as the free SkyDrive cloud storage space).

Do give it a try, and don't forget to grab your @outlook.com email account before someone does it.
(If you already have an hotmail account - or msn, or live - you can simply update to this new outlook.com service and keep all your contacts, email, filters, etc. In this case, you can also add an @Outlook.com email address to your account if you want.)

The Most Amazing Social Network

When I tell people I still prefer email over any other kind of "messaging/social network", some find it odd... But this cartoon shows exactly how I feel. And... it might prompt you to actually think about it.

Maybe that's why I still rely on a "old" mailing list to centralize the community around my main blog (abertoatedemadrugada.com) though it is now disguised under the more modern name of "Google Group". :)

Gmail Tips

It isn't nothing new, but considering most of my friends still act surprised when I tell them, here are a couple of useful tips regarding Gmail.

In cas you didn't noticed yet, Gmail completely ignores periods in your gmail address.

So, if your Gmail email address is: myemailaddress@gmail.com, then all of the following are still valid email addresses for you:

• my.email.address@gmail.com
• my.email.add.ress@gmail.com
  -or even-
• m.y.e.m.a.i.l.a.d.d.r.e.s.s@gmail.com

Perhaps a more useful tip, is using the "plus sign" to better manage your email.

You can give out your email address as:

• my.email.address+work@gmail.com
• my.email.address+friends@gmail.com
  - or even -
• my.email.address+trash@gmail.com

You'll still receive the email in your account, but you'll know be able to better sort all out using filters.
It's also handy to figure out if an email you used in a specific site (myemail+site@gmail.com) ends up being used by some other company to send you spam.

Subscrive RSS Feeds via Email with FeedMyInbox

As you're all well aware (or at least you should) you can easily subscribe to new articles in this blog by clicking on the RSS feed link and selecting subscribe by email - and the same thing can be done on thousands of other blogs and sites.

However, there are feeds that don't offer that email service, and hence the need for a service like FeedMyInbox.

You just need to enter the RSS feed url address and your email, and you'll be able to comfortably read all new stuff directly in your email reader.

Email and Walk [iPhone]

Among the millions of apps in Apple's App Store, there are certainly those that are certainly ingenious.

Just check this Email'n Walk for the iPhone, which claims to turn your emailing while walking a bit safer.

How does it accomplish that? Simple...

Instead of writing your email in a white background, this Email'n Walk uses your iPhone camera to show you youre surroundings as you walk. Just like you were typing on a transparent screen.

I can't really vouch for its "safeness", but... considering its a free App, it won't cost you anything to try it out.
