Google desperately wants LG OLEDs for its next Pixel smartphone

It isn't just Apple that wants to reduce its reliance on Samsung, Google also hopes to enhance its odds of getting curved OLED displays for its next flagship phone, and is betting big on LG Display to do it.

LG G Watch teases us a bit more in new video

Although the Moto 360 has "spoiled" us with its square-breaking-design, LG's G Watch is still a curious smartwatch we want to try out as soon as possible, not to mention it will be one of the first Android Wear devices on the market.

This news video doesn't reveal any new technical information, but it focus on it's timeless design, its waterproof all weather operation (will be interesting to see how the touchscreen behaves when wet), long battery life (mostly due to its low-power always-on screen), and Android compatibility (iOS seems to be left out - which isn't a surprise considering the deep integration Android Wear will have with the Android platform).

I just hope LG has included Qi wireless charging, as the pins we see in the back seem to indicate the G Watch will require a proprietary charging cradle, which is a bit annoying. But if it had wireless charging, I suspect LG would have stated it by now as being a big plus.

... Guess we'll find out soon enough, as the G Watch is expected to reach the stores in June.

LG G Watch will have an "always on" screen

The smartwatch revolution is coming whether you want it or not, and one of the most appealing models is LG's G Watch with Android Wear. And now that it has an official site, we get to know that it will have something that might make it a lot more appealing than some of its competitors: an always on screen.

I find it kind of curious to see how people easily let go of "features" they had in older devices, even going to the point of justifying/excusing the shortcomings of newer devices. Most people today would be just fine with having a smarwatch that requires you to press a button to wake its screen to be able to see something as simple as what time it is - even though any cheap watch is constantly showing the time. Sure, screens use power and etc. etc. But instead of justifying and accommodating it, wouldn't it be better to tell manufacturers: "no, this is not ok, find a way to do it better"?

I believe so, and this G Watch seems to prove that this is possible, and that we should be more demanding about what they trey to push us.

I just don't understand why, with this always-on screen, LG has decided to use so many beauty shots of its G Watch with the screen... off.

Anyway, I admit that while I'm still quite interested in this G Watch, my interest has subsided a bit since Motorola showed us their upcoming Moto 360. In a single moment, "square" smartwatches became "old fashioned" (if we can say so). Even so, I do hope LG's G Watch to be successful, and show us that Android Wear can really make these devices more useful in our daily life.

LG shows its G Watch smartwatch

You don't need to predict the future to tell that the second half of the year will bring us a deluge of smartwatches, each competing for your attention for the next holiday season. LG has revealed one more photo of its upcoming G Watch, a device that may very well become Google's Nexus Smartwach and be one of the first to use the new Android Wear for wearable devices.

Its looks quite simple and nice, and no doubt that just a few weeks ago, it would be exactly the kind os smartwatch you'd hope for. The problem is... since then we've seen Motorola's new Moto 360 smartwatch, and everything changed. Even if it's just for the novelty factor of having a traditional looking circular watch combined with the modernity of a smartwatch, the truth is... it seems to be working. Suddenly, people are talking more and more about how design is important (it always was), and they may no longer settle for having just a "square screen with a bracelet" wrapped around their wrists.

LG Buys WebOS from HP

Over the years there have been countless operating systems that have since died and been forgotten; but few have had the chance - or should I say the resilience - to survive even when all seemed lost. I'm referring to WebOS, a very capable mobile OS that had more than a few things to show any other mobile OS, but that unfortunately wasn't able to be pushed forward by Palm. Then HP took over, and people hoped this would be it, with such a giant behind it, WebOS would finally make it to the big leagues... But we all know out that turned out. Now... once again WebOS seem to defy it's own death, as LG has bought it from HP.

For now LG says their interest it to put it on their Smart TVs, but I don't think LG will stop there. Maybe they'll use the SmartTV platform to iron out some of the quirks and get to know what they can do with WebOS... but it would be a waste not to use it in their own smartphones - replacing their current proprietary mobile OS that, let's be frank about it... sucks.

However, bringing the WebOS back from the grave is not something that will depend on the WebOS alone. People will require it to have a very strong App market that will attract developers, and users, and make it "work". That will certainly be the most difficult part. But, maybe it will join Firefox OS in showing that we do need to make a transition to Web based technology and apps, that free us from any platform specific app store. Who knows?... Maybe WebOS will end up being everything it should have been in the first place.

LG Cinema Screen Computer Monitors

If couldn't stop staring at the new LG Cinema Screen TVs - the ones with barely noticeable frames (just 1mm thick) - and you wondered how such a screen would behave as a computer monitor... LG has news for you. The latest LG IPS7L brings the Cinema Screen design to your computer screen, and is sure to make some heads turn.

Luckily, it uses an IPS LCD panel, which means that no matter how much you turn and tilt your head, its colors will always be perfect - as one would expect looking at such a beautiful display.

You can get this LG IPS7L in 23 and 27" and it even comes with a Mobile HD Link (MHL) port in order to make it easier to connect to mobile devices.

All that is missing is the technical specs so we know what resolutions it has (FullHD at the very least, but one would hope to have the 27" version with a 2560x1600 panel)... as well as its price.

LG Full HD LCD has only 5"

If you thought smartphone's screen resolutions were about to pause for a while, now that we have HD 720 screens in most high-end devices... it seems you (and me) would be wrong. LG has just announced a FullHD - yes, the one with all the 1920x1080 pixels -  LCD screen with just 5".

A screen that shatters Apple's "retina-display" pixel density with an amazing 440ppi that will surely make its images more lifelike than ever.

The screen uses an improved IPS technology (AH-IPS) that promises increased brightness, response speed, and wider viewing angles. And best of all, it will be available in the coming months.

Can you imagine having a smartphone with such a screen and a borderless design? It would make our wildest dreams come true!

Now... can I hear anyone say this is the screen we would hope to see in the upcoming generation of Apple's iPhone? :)

Android Projection Mapping by LG

To promote their line of Optimus Android smartphones, LG decided to put projection mapping to use. And the result, as you can see in the following video, is definitely one of the best examples og what you can achieve with clever graphics and powerful projectors, allowing a Berlin building façade to jump to life.

How to Capture Screenshots in LG Smartphones

While it is incredibly easy to capture screenshots of the screen on an iPhone and even Samsung Bada devices (just press the menu button and the lock/sleep button at the same time), things are not quite as easy on other devices.

For example, for LG smartphones like the LG KF750 Secret, capturing a screenshot requires accessing a secret menu.

You need to enter this secret functions menu by entering the following code:

 338464#*#

Then, you need to proceed to the Capture Mode function and enable it.

From then on you can easily capture screenshots by pressing the Volume Up button!

Keep in mind that, while you have this mode enabled, every press in this button will take a screeshot. So, be sure to disable it as soon as you're done, in order to get your LG back to regular operation mode.

Hybrid Optical Drive gets SSD

After the Hybrid Hard drive (mixing SSD with a regular HD) I guess it was just a matter of time until someone though of doing the same thing with an optical drive.

The Hitachi-LG HyDrive will take combos to the next level, combining an optical drive with an SSD. Meaning your laptop/netbook will be able to carry more stuff... in a lot less space!

Even if they just use extra space for a larger battery, imagine what that would do to enhance your device's battery life.

Count me in!

The HyDrive will be available with 32 and 64GB SSDs, and growing up to 256GB as costs drop down.

LG OLED TV is Coming

The 15" OLED TV by LG is already being sold in Korea, and is now making its way to Europe and the US.

The LG 15E9500 is due in Europe next May and will cost...€2000.
It should arrive at the US a couple months later.

Besides the astronomical contrast ratios of 10,000,000:1 and lightning speed response times of 0.001ms, it will serve its purpose of showing us what the future OLED TVs have to offer.
Although it is a lot of money, it's quite a bit less than the smaller SONY XEL-1.
Maybe that's why Sony has opt out of the OLED business - at least for now...

Might not have arrived in time for Christmas, but if you happen to have $2500 in your pocket and you're travelling to Korea soon, you can already pick up the newest 15" LG OLED TV from the stores.

LG DVD Bluebirds

One annoying surprise I had when assembling my new PC came from where I least expected it: the LG CD/DVD drive.

Little did I know that this unsuspecting GH22NS50 DVD-RW from LG was soon to become a little bugger!

Right from the start I began experiencing some weird Bluebirds content in that drive, whenever the drive was empty.

After some googling around, I found that this particular LG GH22NS50 model has some programs in its firmware, and it "mounts" that image whenever the drive is empty! Unbelievable!

Annoying, but easily fixable: you'll just need to update its firmware to a bluebird-less version!

And I hope that's the last of these experiments coming from LG or any other drive manufacturer.
